Brief aan Jan Truijen

A talking-portrait installation for museums and heritage venues. Visitors write a letter on a converted antique typewriter — and a historical figure writes back, in character, with an AI voice and real-time 3D facial animation.

The Brief aan Jan Truijen installation running at Museum Medelo — antique desk, typewriter, and the talking portrait, with the period costume of Jan Truijen beside it
The installation

A letter to the past, answered

Jan Truijen (1838–1919) was Meijel’s mayor, surveyor, town clerk and MP — a real historical figure whose portrait hangs in Museum Medelo. Visitors sit down at a converted antique typewriter and compose him a letter. When they send it, the portrait comes to life: an AI voice and real-time 3D facial animation reads the letter aloud and replies in character — grounded in the historical archive rather than invented, and honest when it doesn’t know something.

We showed it live to the public for the first time at Museum Medelo’s members-only opening on 20 September 2026 — a working prototype, not yet a permanent unattended installation. Medelo is the proof-of-concept; the format is built to travel.

From typed letter to spoken reply
  1. 1 The visitor types a message on the typewriter
  2. 2 The message is matched against the figure’s archive
  3. 3 A reply is composed, grounded in what’s actually known
  4. 4 The reply is spoken aloud in an AI voice
  5. 5 The portrait’s face animates in sync, on-screen
How it works

The visitor journey, in three beats

I
Write your letter
The visitor sits at the desk and composes a letter to the figure in the portrait, using a converted antique typewriter. No screen, no keyboard.
II
The portrait wakes
The letter is sent, and the portrait comes to life — an AI voice and real-time 3D facial animation prepare a reply drawn from the historical archive.
III
A living reply
The figure answers aloud, in character, referencing real history. If it doesn’t know something, it says so — the moment stays honest, not scripted fantasy.
For your venue

The pipeline is reusable. The portrait is yours.

What stays fixed

  • The pipeline and the visitor flow, from typed message to spoken reply.
  • The onsite deployment hardware.

What we design per venue

  • The historical figure brought to life.
  • The knowledge archive the figure draws on.
  • The input method — it doesn’t have to be a typewriter.
Partnership

Bring a talking portrait to your venue

The talking-portrait format is repeatable: a different historical figure, a different location, the same proven pipeline. If your museum, heritage site, or historic house has a portrait and an archive worth bringing to life, we’d love to hear from you.
